Kartal Municipality, founded in 1871 in Anatolian side of Istanbul as a district municipality, on South-West part of Kocaeli peninsula, Marmara Sea and the Princes Islands near the fault crossing Marmara Sea on the south.
Kartal is a big city on the way to become a metropolis with its surface area of 38,54 km2 and its population as per year 2010 census of 432.199 which nowadays reached approximately 500.000. Kartal is one of the districts that have the largest industrial area of Istanbul, consequently the leading region in incoming emigration. The transportation opportunities encouraged intensive construction activities since 1970’s.
Today Kartal constitutes the most important part of Istanbul Metropolitan Transformation projects prepared in collaboration with prestigious universities. In the line with the projects to be realized, the industrial establishments will be moved out of town and the industrial areas will be transformed into qualified business centres and social facilities. Kartal will become one of the most important tourism, culture and trade centres of Istanbul and Turkey. The main transport ways connecting Istanbul to Anatolia pass from Kartal (airway, railway, Marmaray metro line, maritime line, highways). Kartal Municipality improved its strategic plans to establish an ecological city in accordance with modern urbanization and planning criteria, in urban awareness, self-developing and self-renewing sustainability, cherishing the culture, also related to this project. Integrated quality system approved with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Kartal was selected as a role model with the 100% Ecological Market by ICLEI.
