Residential Renovation towards nearly zero energy CITIES

Energy demand and savings

Main Energy consumption characteristic within the three types of buildings Our simulation has estimated a saving potential in these existing residential buildings varies of 20-50%.

Heating and Hot Water

Heating accounts for 59 % of energy consumption in buildings. Natural gas is the main source of these buildings energy. Heating and hot water together account for 74 % of home energy consumption. Therefore, most energy saving potential is associated with increased use of thermal insulation to avoid heat loss. Buildings in this district, and also most part of Turkey, were built before authorities began (as represented with building 2 to enforce regulations on thermal insulation in 2000; therefore, insulating buildings is the major contributing measure in realizing their savings potential. Our simulation shows that the building 1 in our district, (even though constructed after 2000 has very poor insulation condition) has 40 % saving potential if thermal insulation is installed.

Electricity

Consumption by electricity is 26 %. Electricity is used for lighting, household equipment, building services, and air conditioners.

Lighting accounts for 12 percent for homes. Most lighting fixtures used in these buildings are incandescent, which are 80 percent less efficient than CFLs.

Household Durables (including coolers and air conditioners)

The most efficient refrigerators now consume about 75 percent less energy, and washing machines and dishwashers are now about 40 percent more energy efficient than the 1990 models. Efficiency improvements are attributed to labeling and efficiency regulations, a program that included national government subsidies to manufacturers and consumers of energy efficient appliances.
