The use of low efficiency lighting systems and appliances and a slim insulation means very high energy consumption for Yakacık district of Kartal, Istanbul and therefore a high potential for improving.

The buildings

The three buildings are named as Building 1, Building 2 & Building 3. Buildings are between 5 to 18 years old. They were all built as a single concrete block and have 5 to 8 stories. Building 1 has very poor insulation on its external walls while other two buildings have appropriate insulation already.

Total energy demand for a building and for a dwelling has been estimated by means of Spanish national software tool “Calener”. It is result of the European Union Directive 2002/91/EC relating to the energy performance of buildings, as transposed into Spanish law by “RD.47/2007 The Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections)”.
