Residential Renovation towards nearly zero energy CITIES

The use of low efficiency lighting systems and appliances and a slim insulation means very high energy consumption for Yakacık district of Kartal, Istanbul and therefore a high potential for improving.

The project aims to retrofit a residential district with efficient strategie. Passive design strategies, heating & cooling sources and integration of renewables for building envelope will be implemented.

Project area is located between the Sea of Marmara to the south and the TEM motorways to the north. Motorways, ferries, suburban railways, the Kartal Metro extension and the completion of the Marmaray rail make the location as one of the most accessible sides in Istanbul. The presence of the International Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Formula 1 tract and Sabancı University contribute to the economic structure of the area together with small scale commerce and manufacturing. The retrofitting plan aims at improving the quality of life of the city by developing a strong social, environmental and economic sustainable city based on public participation, respect of the natural and cultural heritage.

The selected pilot site is located at Yakacik district of Kartal. Three residential buildings with different building characteristics have been chosen to represent the energy profile of residential buildings of the district.
